With so many television shows with Halloween episodes this week, I didn’t expect “Modern Family” to blow me away at all.

I love this show to begin with, because I think it’s witty, ironic, and fun, but all I usually get out of it is a silent chuckle inside my head.

But this episode had me actually laughing out loud. And I was watching alone…

It was during the part when poor Mitchell is stuck in his Spiderman costume in between two cars with their alarms going off, with his co-workers watching from the windows.

Maybe I was only laughing because of the sheer awkwardness of it all—Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s “get-me-out-of-here” mixed in with his deer-in-headlights face was the cherry on top of it all.

Speaking of deer in “head lice,” Sofia Vergara’s performance in this episode was also very entertaining.

Don’t forget “doggy dog world,” “volumputous” and “carpool tunnel syndrome.”

It was great to see her face fall a little each time Jay (Ed O’Neill) named a phrase that she could not pronounce correctly.

When Gloria decided to spite him by speaking in proper “American,” she reminded me so much of my own mom when I used to poke fun at her English mixed in with her Korean accent. And yes, she got angry too.

I’ve got to say, I commend the writers to this show for coming up with these great one-liners sprinkled throughout the episode, not just from Gloria but Claire (Julie Bowen) and Jay as well.

My favorite two was when Gloria yelled at Haley (Sarah Hyland) for her revealing costume and asked whether she was trying to get candy or a Japanese businessman; and when Jay got frustrated with all of Claire’s nagging about the fog cue that he yelled “fog cue” pretty loudly (sound it out loud if it’s taking you a moment).

From Cameron’s (Eric Stonestreet) confession of how peeing his pants on Halloween scarred his childhood to Phil’s (Ty Burrell) attempts to add some spiciness to his marriage out of irrational fear of a divorce, “Modern Family” did a great job of including every character’s frenzy into a 22-minute show.

Some may argue the episode was a bit over the top, much like the Halloween decorations in the Dunphy house, but I think that is what makes us love this family to begin with.
