The Los Angeles City Council Transportation Committee voted unanimously Wednesday to increase the fine for harassing a biker to at least $1000 and also to prepare an ordinance on preventing biker harassment.

Several members of the public spoke on behalf of the proposed biker harassment ordinance before the councilmembers all voted in favor of pursuing an ordinance to improve this problem.

The more divisive issue at the meeting was the regulation of food trucks, which have been viewed by some as detrimental to traditional brick-and-mortar restaurants and health and safety hazards. The committee moved to continue working on an ordinance for a system that would regulate food truck activity with permits.

Gabriela Juarez from the department of city planning presented the case of for the positive benefits of food trucks — increased walkability and sidewalk revitalization in neighborhoods.

The committee will re-convene and propose these ordinances in no less than 60 days.
