Initiatives To Legalize Marijuana And Delay Global Warming Bill Not Favored In New Poll

Most California voters oppose Propositions 19 and 23, polling released by Reuters/Ipsos Tuesday afternoon shows.

At the beginning of the summer, state voters were evenly split about whether or not the state should skip over federal law and legalize marijuana.

But now, at the beginning of the fall, and with exactly four weeks to go until the election, voters say they oppose legalization 53 percent to 43 percent.

Most voters in the state's two biggest cities--San Francisco and L.A.--favor the measure. Though Democrats outnumber Republicans in California, they support the measure by only a 10-percent margin while Republicans oppose it two-to-one. Combined with an evenly divided vote among independents, the measure appears to be losing steam.

The poll also shows gloom for Proposition 23, which would prevent the state from enforcing tough environmental regulations on businesses until the unemployment rate reaches a steady 5.5 percent.

Forty-nine percent of California voters oppose the measure calling for that delay. Thirty-seven percent favor it. 37 percent favor the proposal, the poll said. The results differ from the L.A. Times Poll/USC poll released Sept. 25 that found only a two percent margin in favor, 40-38.
