Baca, Obama Administration Will Enforce Marijuana Ban, Defying Prop 19 If It Passes
Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca said Friday morning that his deputies will continue to enforce federal law banning the use of marijuana, even if California's Proposition 19 passes. The initiative on the Nov. 2 ballot would legalize the recreational use of marijuana in the state.
Joined by District Attorney Steve Cooley and several former DEA officials, Baca said Prop 19 would not change anything for his department.
His position was echoed by U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, who announced Friday that the DEA will continue to crack down on violations of federal marijuana laws.
Holder already called off the DEA last year from targeting medical marijuana operations in the 13 states permitting medicinal use of pot.
The nine former DEA heads wrote a letter to Holder in August, asking him to sue California and prevent Prop 19 from going into effect if it is passed.
Holder replied back with a letter of his own, writing that the Justice Department "remains firmly committed to enforcing the federal Controlled Substances Act in all states."
