UPDATED: Barbara Boxer Pushes Her Stance On Women's Rights
Proudly touting her pro-choice platform, Sen. Barbara Boxer attempted Thursday to showcase herself as the women's rights candidate in the all-female race for California's senate seat.
Boxer appeared on stage with a group of women, including Los Angeles area Congresswomen Jane Harmon and Diane Watson, NARAL leader Nancy Keenan, and actresses Maria Bello and Amy Brenneman. In her speech, Boxer drew a fine line between herself and Republican challenger Carly Fiorina.
"Make no mistake about it, a woman's right to choose is on the ballot this November." Boxer said.
Fiorina has previously made clear that she is pro-life, though there is some disagreement about her stance on Roe v. Wade. Boxer repeatedly asserted that her opponent supports overturning the Supreme Court case, which permits legal abortions, though in a September debate, Fiorina maintained she is in favor of keeping the law on the books.
Currently, two-thirds of Californians support legal abortions in the state.
Keenan, who leads the pro-choice organization NARAL, compared Fiorina to Sarah Palin.
"Voting for Carly is no different than having Sarah Palin as the Senator from California," Keenan said.
Though Palin has endorsed Fiorina, the former CEO of Hewlett Packard has been hesitant to fully embrace the ex-governor of Alaska. Fiorina has chosen to appear at a rally with John McCain rather then Palin when the two of them visit California this Saturday.
In a Rasmussen poll released Thursday, Boxer maintains a 49 to 46 percent lead over Fiorina among likely voters. Abortion and women's rights issues rank below other voter concerns, such as the economy and jobs.
Members of Fiorina's camp didn't return call for comment.
