The MTV Video Music Awards is the one red carpet –or in the case of this year’s event, white carpet—that is more about having fun with fashion than going all out in gowns and tuxes.  While some stars showcased their individual style to the max (Lady Gaga in a meat dress anyone?), overall, the fashions at this year’s event were somewhat underwhelming.

While Labor Day weekend has passed, fall has yet to officially begin, leaving me wondering why so many of this year’s attendees opted for such drab color palettes. For guys, going in head-to-toe black seemed to be a popular trend, as seen on Drake, Usher, Justin Timberlake, Jason Derulo, Akon and Justin Bieber (though I have to admit, I kind of have a soft spot for the Biebs’ overall look despite its monotonous color scheme). Several female stars went for a twist on the drab black and added a touch of white, including Ashley Greene in Giambattista Valli and Katy Perry in Marchesa –still not the fun, vibrant colors I would love to have seen at an MTV event.

While we're on the subject of Katy Perry, the “California gurl” has landed herself on my worst-dressed list. Perry even described her dress as looking like she got a “tattoo when [she] was drunk,” which in my opinion is never a good thing. The sheer tattoo top reminiscent of a figure-skating costume was not at all helped by the napkin-looking white skirt of the dress –and those cheesy blue and pink hair pieces were not gaining her any style points either.

Also making my picks for worst-dressed are Snooki (no surprise there), who looked even more orange than usual and wore an awful tacky-looking blue paisley dress that was too short and too tight (though I am a fan of her new bangs), Evan Rachel Wood in an extremely ill-fitted leopard-print Gucci dress and Kanye West, whose red suit with matching shoes was just not working for me at all.

Despite these fashion blunders, there were some celebs who definitely rocked the white carpet with their looks. My picks for best dressed are Sofia Vergara, who looked stunning in a curve-hugging black sequined dress (then again, it’s nearly impossible for her to not look stunning), Taylor Swift, who nailed the old Hollywood glamour look in a nude tone D&G dress and amazing hair and makeup, and Ashley Greene, who although played it safe with her choice of color palette, managed to look feminine and cute with just the right amount of edge thanks to the black lace detailing on her minidress.
