Riot Gear-Clad LAPD Officers Swarm Protests Over Shooting Of Day Laborer
The circumstances surrounding the death of the Guatemalan day laborer, identified by neighborhood residents as Manuel Jamines, are unclear.
The protesters gathered at the intersection of Union Avenue and 6th Street, where the death occurred.
Robert Lopez of the Los Angeles Times reports that:
Using bullhorns as they chanted “assassination, assassination,” the protesters at one point got into a shouting and shoving match with a store security guard, who fled to his car and sped away as protesters hurled objects and kicked at his vehicle.
Some of the people gathered displayed a Guatemalan flag at the place of Jamines' death and were collecting money for the family.
LAPD is currently investigating the circumstances of the shooting.
Another recent, fatal police shooting has also sparked controversy. On Tuesday, Attorney Luis Carrillo is expected to announce a wrongful death lawsuit against the LAPD and the City of Los Angeles related to a fatal officer-involved shooting at Washington Boulevard and Arlington Avenue on August 28.
