David Stern: Environmental Activist?

NBA commissioner David Stern is famously intolerant of bad behavior on the court. Apparently, he feels the same way about global warming.

The commish did his part to put the kibosh on greenhouse gas emissions in California Monday, donating $1,000 to No on 23 - Californians To Stop The Dirty Energy Proposal, according to Secretary of State Debra Bowen's website. (You know somewhere Mark Cuban is contemplating a $2,000 Yes on 23 donation just to mess with him.)

The donation is Stern's fourth contribution to California politics this year by my count.

He has also made contributions to the campaigns of Barbara Boxer and Carolyn McCarthy totaling $7,100, according to campaignmoney.com.

Prop 23 is a California initiative that would put a restraint on the 2006 Global Warming Solutions Act, better known as AB 32, until the state's unemployment rate drops below 5.5 percent. Unemployment in California is currently at 12 percent.

Those in favor of the prop say AB 32, which dicates that a third of the state's electricity come from alternative energy sources, leads to job loss and higher electricity rates. Those opposed, including Stern apparently, feel that passing Prop 23 will signal the end of California's green revolution.

Stern's involvement in California politics is beyond me, but he obviously has a vested interest.

Anybody have insight into this?
