One of America’s most famous lawyers, Gloria Allred delivered an unwelcome pre-October surprise to Republican Meg Whitman just hours after her first gubernatorial debate against Jerry Brown.

In case you haven’t heard yet, Allred brought allegations to California’s - and actually, the entire nation's - attention that Whitman may have knowingly employed an illegal immigrant, Nicky Diaz Santillan, as her housekeeper.

"We do have to hold employers accountable for hiring only documented workers. And we do have to enforce that law," Meg Whitman said during Tuesday night’s gubernatorial debate.

In all honesty, it is not surprising that a high-profile CEO hired an illegal immigrant to do the housework. Nor is it surprising that her opponent’s support is trying to bring her down right now.

Look at what’s going on: both parties are using whatever information they have to make them look good in this interesting race. Republicans are saying Whitman completely had no idea and that she is a saint who will save California; Democrats, on the other hand, believe she is evil and does not care about the people of this state.

I am convinced that Nicky Diaz did initially deceive Meg Whitman about her legal status. In fact, you can look at her falsified papers right here. Then a few years down the road, Meg Whitman realized she had hired an illegal immigrant. However, Gloria Allred on Thursday produced the Social Security letter that purpotedly shows that the agency contacted Whitman several times to say that Diaz’s number and name did not match up. Whitman never replied and has denied receiving the letter.

When Whitman decided to run for office in June 2009, she did some political damage control and fired her housekeeper. Gloria Allred caught sight of this information and is choosing to use it now because the election is less than five weeks away.

According to Whitman, she did everything she could to check her housekeeper's status, even checking her driver's license. Funny thing is that this license was from 1991, a time when California didn’t require proof of legal residence—that didn’t start until 1994. Even so, Nicky Diaz started working for Whitman in 2000 and continued to work for her until 2009. At some point she would have had to renew her driver’s license. So you had absolutely no idea Whitman? Really?

Now, to the other side: Gloria Allred, you always amuse me and you are a genius PR person. Of course you would choose to reveal such a thing right after the first Brown-Whitman face-off. Allred is not only a registered Californian Democrat but a HUGE Jerry Brown supporter. She donated $1,000 to him in 1982 and $150 in 2006 along with tens of thousands of dollars to Democratic candidates and causes.

Your dear Jerry is losing Latino supports and you had to act at the right time. I understand that. However, most Latinos aren’t rallying along with Whitman’s billion-dollar tax break for billionaires. Opinion polls will continue to fluctuate. Will you start mayhem if Whitman slightly beats
Brown in the polls before Election Day?

I am looking forward to Election Day though I think I am more excited for the shady political warfare that always seems to happen right before.
