The Boston Globe announced Thursday that it will begin charging for online content in the second half of 2011, marking the publication's entry into two emerging journalism industry trends.

The Globe, which is run by The New York Times Company, will shift its news and feature stories, photography and full contents of the daily paper from Boston.com to a new site, BostonGlobe.com, which will require a paid subscription. The paywall model places The Globe among other major newspapers, including The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times

Boston.com will become a hyperlocal site, focusing on news, weather, sports and culture — as well as some articles from The Globe — in the vein of ChicagoNow and TBD.com, D.C.'s new hyperlocal news site.

A reader will be able to see a certain number of articles on Boston.com before registering, but BostonGlobe.com will require immediate registration. The Globe's print subscribers will have full access to BostonGlobe.com.

The Times Company hasn't set advertising pricing for the dual sites, but said they hope to attract more "targeted advertising." Registration will make collecting more demographic information possible.

The company is also launching a number of branded apps and digital products for smarthones and other digital devices. The Globe currently has a free news app and a free real estate app, but charges for The Big Picture app.
