The Weekender - Top 5 Things To Do The First Weekend Of August In L.A.

Experience Chinatown come alive this Saturday, the first night in a series of evenings showcasing the many cultural offerings of the neighborhood. Grab dinner at one of L.A.'s tastiest food trucks that will be gathered in Central Plaza, then go to the interactive dance workshop, and top it all off by dancing to KCRW DJ Raul Campos. Be sure to visit the promotions page on the event website to get deals at local shops for the weekend.

2. Music in the L.A. Zoo
This Friday is Local Scene night at the L.A. Zoo, where local bands will play throughout the zoo including Voxhaul Broadcast, Useless Keys, The Happy Hollows and Walking Sleep. 3. Shakespeare by the Sea
Et tu, Brute? Get cultured this weekend by attending one of three free Shakespeare performances put on by Shakespeare by the Sea. The classic "Julius Caesar" plays this Friday and Saturday nights, and the hilariously mixed-up "Twelfth Night" on Sunday. The performances are outdoors and fill up quickly. Two perks of going: experiencing Shakespeare outside of a high school classroom, and making your friends feel bad for not being as classy as you when they ask what you're up to this weekend.

Friday, Aug. 6 - Sunday, Aug. 8, 7 p.m.
4. Friday Night Skate
What has four wheels, laces and a new sense of coolness? Your old roller skates. I know you have them. Take them out of the back of your closet, dust them off and join a group of fellow skaters this Friday night in Santa Monica. Even if you aren't cool enough to have your own skates, borrow them from someone cooler and come anyway. It's a party on wheels. Skaters meet up by the cannon near the entrance to the Santa Monica Pier at 8:30. Boom box optional.

Friday, Aug. 6, 8:30 p.m.
5. Richard Simmons @ Slimmons Studio
It's like watching those ridiculous Richard Simmons workout tapes our moms had. Except even better, because he's there--in person. For just $12 you can get your weekend workout led by Richard Simmons. I guarantee going to your gym instead won't be nearly as hilarious. Dress up in crazy 80s workout clothes and get your butt in gear!
