The Weekender - The Top 5 Things To Do This August 20 Weekend In L.A.
A music-lover's paradise, this Silverlake music festival and street fair features more than 70 different bands and DJs over two days. Make sure to check out local bands Moses Campbell and Dawes Saturday, and Edward Sharpe Sunday. See the entire line-up here.
Last year there were between 75,000 to 100,000 eager fans each day. Tickets cost $15 if you buy them online, and $20 at entry. Parking is available at LACC on Heliotrope Drive, and a shuttle service is provided.
Saturday, Aug. 21, 11 a.m. - 11 p.m.
Sunday, Aug. 22, 11 a.m. - 10 p.m.
2. Red Bull Flugtag
Okay, we've all seen the little cartoon character fly the winged contraption off the cliff in the Red Bull commercials, but wouldn't it be great to see that in real life? This Saturday is your chance. The annual Red Bull Flugtag event takes place in Long Beach, one of just four locations in the U.S.
Watch the people crazy enough to compete fly their creative contraptions off a 30-foot high flight deck before they plunge into the water. Past entries have included flying tacos, pterodactyls and even Snoopy and his friends. I wonder what they'll come up with this year...
Saturday, Aug. 21, gates open at 11 a.m., first flight at 1 p.m.
3. Hermosa Beach Sunset Concerts
Everyone loves a good beach concert, and Hermosa Beach gives it to you this weekend. Listen to acoustic rock guitarist Trevor Hall and classic rock group Jeremy Buck and the Bang. If their music doesn't entertain you, these guys' hairstyles alone should. Find the music on the South Pier.
Sunday, Aug. 22nd, 6 p.m.
4. Zombie Weekend
Take a trip through the history of horror films with 1968's "Night of the Living Dead" and 1979's "Zombie" in a double-feature at the Egyptian Theatre. If you've seen these movies, you know what cult classics they are. If you haven't, here is one of many things you have to look forward to: the world's greatest fight between a zombie and a shark. I can't think of a better way to spend a Sunday evening. Bring a student ID for $2 off general admission tickets.
Sunday, Aug. 22nd, 7:30 - 10:30 p.m.
5. DIY @ LACE
Explore the DIY culture of L.A. in this interactive lecture on the ways you can start your own space, whether it be for music, art, literature or some other passion. DIY-ers Mark Allen (founder of Machine Project, a local initiative designed to feed Angelenos' DIY curiosity) and creative guru Jen Smith will lead the discussion. To spark your DIY curiosity, a pickling workshop will be offered where you can leave with a jar of your own homemade pickled masterpiece.
Saturday, Aug. 21, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.
