CA State Regulators Approve Last Hurdle Blocking Expo Line's First Phase

Construction should begin early next year on a light rail station adjacent to Dorsey High School that will service the Expo Line, under a design plan that had been released several months ago but received final approval from the California Public Utilities Commission on Thursday.

Unless a group such as the Citizens' Campaign to Fix the Expo Light Rail Line challenges the CPUC's decision in court, the ruling should mark the removal of the final hurdle ahead of the completion of the line's first phase. That could mean one-hour round-trip train service from Downtown Los Angeles to Culver City by this time next year.

The second phase of the project would carry passengers from Culver City to the heart of Santa Monica. For an in-depth and interactive look at the entire project, including concerns about safety and increased traffic, check out my previous article.

Neon Tommy will provide an update on the progress of phase two--the environmental impact report of which is under litigation--when the Expo Authority Board meets again in early September.
