Small Fee On Phone Bills Could Bring Internet Service To 14 Million People

For more than a decade, the Federal Communications Commission has basically been paying phone companies to build phone lines in rural areas. The advent of broadband connections now allow not only voice communications, but also transfer of data such as everything that exists on the Web.

The FCC wants to stop paying telecommunications to build phone lines and start paying them to produce broadband service where it does not already exist. The presentation below explains the project in more detail, including the divide between Democrats and Republicans about how to make the policy change.
