Linton Juaquin, General Counsel of the National Immigration Law Center, explained the immigration ruling on SB 1070 in a conference call Wednesday afternoon.

Some of the parts of SB 1070 that the federal judge blocked include:

*A requirement that police officers investigate the immigration status of anyone they stop who they think is in the country illegally

*The mandatory detention of people until their immigration status is determined

*Making it a state crime for failing to register with immigration authorities or failing to carry registration documents

*Making it a state crime to solicit or perform unauthorized work

Some things that the judge didn't block include:

*A provision that makes it a state crime for a person to be in violation of a criminal offense and to transport or harbor a person who is an illegal immigrant, or to encourage them to live in Arizona.  (So don't go around telling potential illegal immigrants that Arizona is f*#*$ing awesome!)

*A provision to impound vehicles used for harboring illegal immigrants

*Making it unlawful to enter a vehicle in order to work, or to hire someone who enters your vehicle if it could impede the flow of traffic. "A provision that could be defended in terms of a regulating traffic, perhaps. But of course, it's really intended to go after day laborers,"  Juaquin said.
