Meg Whitman Fail

Meg Whitman’s new campaign ad has failure written all over it. Literally. The Whitman campaign recently launched its first television spot attacking Jerry Brown. The ad attempts to paint Brown as a career politician with a record of failure. (The ad opens and closes with a shot of an actual record – clearly Whitman isn’t worried about appealing to younger voters.) It starts, “40 years in politics, and failure has followed him everywhere.”

Fine. It just wouldn’t be campaign season without some good attack ads. But the problem comes around the 50 second mark, when the ad shows what appears to be a screenshot of the popular website FAIL Blog. The shot doesn’t last long, but it’s clearly Brown’s image with the word “FAIL” written across it and the title “Jerry Brown Fail.”

But it looks like it’s more of a Meg Whitman fail.

Ben Huh, founder of the Cheezburger Network, which runs FAIL Blog, lambasted the Whitman campaign for the faked screenshot, which he says goes against FAIL Blog’s mission.

In a letter posted to the site, Huh writes, “We want to make it VERY clear that FAIL Blog nor Cheezburger Netowrk had any involvement or knowledge of the Whitman campaign use of a screen shot of FAIL Blog. In fact, the screenshot portrayed in the video never existed because the Whitman campaign faked the content within the screenshot.”

Huh adds that FAIL blog does not endorse candidates or political parties and demands an apology from the Whitman campaign and the removal of the video. He’s also talking about the possibility of a lawsuit.

The post includes a picture of Whitman with “FAIL” written across her forehead. But Huh warns, “Jerry Brown, you better not be thinking of using this image or post in your political ad either."
