Coming from a drastic change in his appearance, Matisyahu brings back the earlier jam-band and reggae vibes mixed with a few “top 40” songs at the Hollywood Palladium.

This past Tuesday, he played many tracks from his latest album, Spark Seeker, which sheds a new perspective on his “internal enlightenment” reflected by his physical appearance change, leaving behind the long beard and kippah.

In an interview on the MatisyahuTV channel on YouTube (seen below), Matis talked of his transformation in that “sometimes you need to strip everything back. The way I see it, the music speaks to people,” referring to his “inner experience” demonstrated by his latest songs.

During a trip to Israel, Matisyahu self-reflected and collaborated with numerous musicians, including the song “Tel Aviv’n” written in Tel Aviv, Israel. Upon his return to Los Angeles, he hit the studio with producer KoOol KoJak (Nicki Minaj, Flo Rida), who laid down the beats as he wrote and produced the Billboard charts hit song “Sunshine.”

Moving the crowd at the Palladium, the songs varied with top hit songs and religious overtones of Hebrew chanting like in the opening of “Crossroads.” They also played from an earlier repertoire with songs like “Time of Your Song” and “Youth,” and Matisyahu had peoples' hands in the air as men and women danced to the catchy beat and jamming instrumentals.

Continuing on that note, they played more dub and slightly reggae songs “Searching” and “Darkness,” in which the band showed off their skills as musicians, and Matis made sure the bass was turned up loud enough to have the beat thumping in your chest.

Matisyahu even felt the good music vibes by mystically swaying to the ethereal melodies, and at one point he took a leap of faith over the four feet barricade gap to crowd surf.

Matisyahu also did not disappoint in his rapping abilities from his earlier song “King Without a Crown” as he sang his recurring theme, “Strip away the layers and reveal your soul” while sporting green running shoes, sunglasses, and short blonde hair with no headwear.

He added to the show when he brought on stage a special guest and brother to freestyle rap that got the crowd digging the new, more contemporary approach on religion as an “inner experience” in which you don’t have to wear symbols to recognize a king without a crown.

Closing out the show, or by this point a unifying experience of one love, he sat on top of the right speaker as he sang, “Sometimes I lay under the moon and thank God I’m breathing” and ushered fans onto the stage.

Soon the stage filled up with fans as they sang in unison, “All my life I've been waiting for, I've been praying for, for the people to say that we don't wanna fight no more. There'll be no more wars and our children will play, one day,” and Matisyahu smiled from his perch as his brothers and sisters shared the limelight and came together as one people.
