Whitman, Poizner Face Off In Battle For Endorsements

Meg Whitman's sizable lead over Steve Poizner in current polls is reflected in her endorsements. She has been endorsed by many popular and powerful Republicans, while Poizner's endorsers are far less well known.

Here is a brief summary of their supporters:

Meg Whitman has been endorsed by key members of the George W. Bush administration, former Vice President Dick Cheney and former Secretary of State Condeleeza Rice. Other supporters are Sen. John McCain, former Gov. Mitt Romney, former NYC Mayor Rudy Guiliani and former Secretary of State George P. Schultz. She is also backed by congresspeople, senators, the mayors of Fresno, Orange, Torrance, Laguna Hills, Anaheim and others, and many state assembly people. Her campaign chairman is former California Gov. Pete Wilson.

Steve Poizner has been endorsed by former California Gov. George Deukmejian, former California State Treasurer Matt Fong and former President of the California Republican Assembly Mike Spence. Other supporters are the mayors of Modesto, Los Gatos, Manhattan Beach, San Marcos and others, congresspeople and senators. He has also been backed by the Young Republican Federation of California, the California Republican Veterans of America, the California Small Business Association and the Gun Owners of California.
