Staff reporter Ryan Nunez spent the day in Pasadena and talked with voters about how they learned about the candidates.
Clara Johnson learned about the candidates from reading a lot, TV and the seniors she works with. She voted for Jerry Brown "for old times sake." "He's like me: old and better," she added.
Vicky learned about the candidates from the TV. She said she doesn't remember who she voted for. "I'm annoyed with the Democratic Party that the only person their giving us is Jerry Brown and so I just voted for somebody else. I know that's terrible but it's only a primary."
Andrew Jackson learned about the candidates from brochures and the telephone calls he got. He voted for Jerry Brown because he "didn't like the other names."
Juanita Brown learned about the candidates from the many telephone calls she got last month and the information that came in the mail. She voted for Jerry Brown because "he's been around for a very long time." "He's experienced," she added.
Jeannie Valdez learned about the candidates from NPR. She voted for Meg Whitman because of "her ideas."
Danny Lanaga learned about the candidates from his parents and newspapers. He said he didn't remember who he voted for for governor because he was more concerned about the propositions.
Steven B. learned about the candidates from the New York Times primarily and the L.A. Times. He voted for Jerry Brown. "I liked him as governor back in the 1970s even though I wasn't old enough to vote for him at that time," he said. "I think he's a strong candidate with progressive values."
Lars Jorgensen learned about the candidates on the Internet and through television. He voted for Jerry Brown because "he's the least shrill." "I've personally met the man and I know that he's studied Buddhism, which for me is the least offensive of the religions," he added.
Gwen Flowers learned about the candidates from brochures she received in the mail. She voted for Jerry Brown because "he was governor before." "I'm a Democrat," she added. "I wanted to vote for him."
Furhman Flowers says he has known most of the candidates for a long time. "A lot of them are very popular, they've been around," he said. He voted for Jerry Brown because "he has a better chance of defeating the Republicans."
Katherine Zlab is non-partisan so she didn't vote for any of the candidates. The ballot initiatives mattered the most to her.
Bruce Sutherland learned about the candidates mainly through NPR. He voted for Jerry Brown because "whatever office he's in he seems real effective."
Francis learned about the candidates from reading. She is an Independent so she didn't vote for any candidates she didn't know about. Her vote was influenced the most by "the Republicans."
