On the Wednesday before Mother's Day, numerous vendors at the Los Angeles Flower Market had their flowers out and ready for sale by 2 a.m.

And even six hours later, those same cheerful vendors are eager to share their love of flowers with anyone and everyone who walks in their direction.

Unlike many flower shops and wholesale stores in L.A., this flower market engulfs its customers in every direction with the bright colors of beautiful flower arrangements.

Returning customers and first timers alike cannot help but wander for a bit, looking at the endless rows of lilies, carnations, daisies, orchids, roses and close to 70 other flowers that are sold in the spring.

With Mother's Day quickly approaching, the vendors have been selling to florists all over Los Angeles.

"A flower is the most simple, the most timeless, and the most loved gift," said Emilio Verdugo, a vendor who has worked at the market for 10 years. "Flowers make everyone smile, and no Mother's Day present is complete without a bouquet of mom's favorite flowers."

What began as a small floral market started by Southern California Japanese flower growers in 1913 is now the largest wholesale flower district in the United States.

The market, which is located in the core of the Los Angeles Flower District on the corner of Wall Street and 8th Street, has more than 80 independent vendors selling wholesale flowers and floral supplies.

Flowers grown all over the rich soil of California as well as imported from around the world find their way to the Los Angeles Flower Market.

Florists, event planners and suppliers and flower lovers come to this corner of Downtown Los Angeles to purchase the best quality flowers at the lowest cost.
