California is home to 10 of the nation's smoggiest counties with Los Angeles taking the lead ahead of Riverside, San Bernardino and Kern, according to the American Lung Association's annual assessment.

The report shows poor air quality endangers more than 33 million people - 91 percent of the state's residents. Southern Californians are the most at risk partly due to the overcrowded freeways, ports, refineries and power plants.
Inhaling dirty air can cause serious health effects, especially in individuals already suffering from airway conditions like asthma.
Watch what a respiratory health doctor and three L.A. residents are saying about the city continuing its role as the smoggiest in the U.S.
