Twelve thousand Los Angeles students avoid LAUSD schools and instead
get permits to go to schools in other districts. In February, Superintendent
Ramon Cortines moved to limit the number of these permits, which would
have forced the students back into LAUSD.

To the relief of many parents, Cortines said at the LAUSD board
meeting Tuesday that most of those students will be granted permits
next year. In September, however, he will come back with a new permit
plan for the 2011 school year.
