When I first got my hands on Will Knox's LP, I didn't
know what to expect. He is a
singer/songwriter from London, who was schooled at Berklee and lives in New
York, trying to cut his teeth in folk music. Not exactly the well-traveled path.
Some may think his path was odd, but I was intrigued by this
uniqueness. After opening my mail,
I looked at the nifty packaging, I had a good feeling about this record. And
needless to say, my internal feelings about this record were spot on.
Knox's debut, 'The Matador and The Acrobat' is a terrific debut. The songs pack a punch, yet at the
same time, are subtle and warm. His
songwriting is very strong and the lyrics tell the story of life in America
through a foreigner's eyes. This
is best expressed in 'Immigrant Hands.'
Whether it be singing about being stuck in 'The Belly of the
Beast' or merely a 'Cog in the Machine,' Will Knox proves with this record that
despite not being from America, he is in touch with what makes folk music so powerful. With strong
songwriting, expect to hear more from Knox in the years to come.
