Deputy Chief Charlie Beck is now officially Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's selection to the be the next chief of the LAPD. Beck had his first chance Tuesday to address the press and the public about taking over for Chief Bill Bratton. He thanked the mayor and the police commission. Richie Duchon was there and filed this story.

In advance of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's morning press conference, KPCC and the Los Angeles Times are reporting Deputy Police Chief Charlie Beck will be tapped to lead the department.

Beck is a 32-year veteran of the department, and brings with him support from both rank-and-file officers and civil rights advocates. He helped reform the Rampart Division in 2002 after it was hit with a major corruption scandal in the 1990s.
Beck's father also served as a department deputy chief. His daughter is an officer at the Hollywood station and his son will soon be graduating from the police academy.
Beck is replacing William Bratton, who served as chief for seven years. Bratton, an import from Boston and New York, was widely seen as a success in Los Angeles. Crime rates have dropped and relations between the police and minority communities are better.
Villaraigosa will formally announce his selection at a press conference at 11 a.m. today.
