Pewter in the Making
Amid the theatrical and musical performances at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival, craft vendors were hard at work highlighting their talents, making sure booths were stocked and finding ways to keep potential buyers interested.
Some vendors sold jewelry, clothing and hats. Others offered drums, glassware and trinkets.
Originally from Johanessburg, Stacey displayed her pewter works, which she has been crafting for two and a half years. But even with her shop in Johannesburg, Stacey said most of her sales come from festivals like Grahamstown.
"There are really only two techniques," she said. "And once you get those basics down, then you can experiment and make it your own."
To attract passersby, Stacey set up a craft station for people to see her at work. She bent and molded the alloy of tin, copper and antinomy before customers to highlight the option for customized pieces.
And for those who wanted to test their skills, she sold kits with the basic tools needed to create their own pewter designs.
After the festival Stacey said she plans to branch out from base in Johanessburg and set up a shop in Port Elizabeth.
