Grand Prix Zooms Into Long Beach
A motley crowd of speed junkies, celebrities and celebrity gawkers and even environmentalists honoring Earth Day weekend mashed into the Long Beach Convention Center for the 35th Annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.
The IndyCars Race headlined the weekend festivities.
Pounding through a 1.97 mile course through the Long Beach city streets near Rainbow Harbor, 23 world class racers dashed through an 11-turn circuit just steps from the Pacific coast.
Indy 500 champion Dario Franchitti powered through the 85 laps to win the IndyCars race.
The course began at Shoreline Drive near the Long Beach Convention Center complex and will continue past the Aquarium of the Pacific, the Pike and other points along Pine Street and Seaside Way.
The Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race also drew attention during the weekend as celebrities including comedian Carlos Mencia, film stars Adrien Brody and Keanu Reeves, and TV "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek climbed into their own identical Scion tCs to race for charity.
